There are several miles of downhill mountain biking trails located in the Big Levels / Sherando Lake Mountain Biking System. Sure hill climbs are difficult, strenuous uphill rides are always fantastic and give you a feeling of reward at the end, but most bikers also relish hitting some downhill portions of trails. Sherando Lake is a great place to enjoy downhill mountain biking.
There is a popular 21 mile loop trail that takes you by the Blue Ridge Parkway that most bikers love. It consist of mostly XC type trails. Exit the Sherando Lake Park and turn left, ride down Big Levels (Coal Rd.) and turn left on to Coal Road. From Coal Rd. you'll hit Forrest Rd. and then turn left on Mill Creek. Mill Creek is a bit steep at the end, but it's smooth. At the top of the ridge, you'll turn left onto a jeep trail before making a quick right turn to get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. After turning left on to the parkway you'll find several miles of Downhill Mountain Biking Virginia.
If you'd rather enjoy the descent down into the valley from a single track instead of the parkway's pavement, you can hit Mill Creek and take Torry Ridge to Slacks Trail thru White Rock Gap.
