If off-road four-wheelin’ is your idea of adventure, you’ve come to the right place. Just a short distance from Cabin Creekwood is the entrance to the Stoney Run Jeep Trail. This 12-mile trail begins on the Coal Road and ends on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sections of this trail are very steep and rocky, making it a four-wheel drive only trail. Trust me on this one. I’ve gone through in a stock Nissan Pathfinder, but it was a challenge.
To access the lower end, leave Creekwood Lane and turn left down the hill. At the stop sign, make a right onto 664 and go 4 miles. Turn left on the Coal Road. Follow the Coal Road approximately 7 miles to forest service road 162. Turn left on 162. That is the Stoney Run jeep trail.
It is a little easier to find the top end. Go south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to approximately milepost 18. Look for a small pulloff on the right-hand side of the road with just one picnic table. Just to the right of that is a forest service road. Just a short ways in, the forest service road forks. Take the road to the left.
Call the Pedlar Ranger District (540-291-2188) for more information or to check on trail closures.
