For mountain biking vacations, Sherando Lake and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests provide some great trails for serious mountain bikers. Through word of mouth, our area has become a significant training area for mountain bikers wishing to hone their skills and practice. Take on the Sherando Lake loop challenge and come and stay with us. The weather and scenery will not disappoint! There are lots of Shenandoah Valley sites that lead to mountain trail points and the Sherando Lake Loop is one of the best trails that leads to nearly 20 MILES of singletrack mountain biking trails and dirt/paved roads.
There is a great point that ascends from Sherando Lake through Big Levels and moves on toward the Bald Mountain Overlook. This is a particularly challenging trail as it has more than 1,000 feet of vertical climbs! The effort is worth it though and provides some stunning views and leads all the way to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is another renowned mountain biking route.
In nearby Harrisonburg, there is also the Rocktown Trails, which were designed and developed utilizing the IMBA guidelines. If you stay with us for mountain bike vacations you’ll likely want to check out multiple spots. The Rocktown spot is a great place to ride. This dirt single track trail system was designed for both mountain bikers and trail hikers/runners and features three levels of difficulty. To get there, take Hillandale Avenue off of VA 42 South (also called South High Street) in Harrisonburg. Follow Hillandale Avenue into the park and you’ll see the trailhead on the right before the circle.
