I’ve Been There…
Some years ago Deb and I worked a booth for the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association at a Snowbird Event in Tampa Florida. (If you don’t know, a “snowbird” is a person who spends their summers in the north, and travels to Florida for the winter).
Our booth proudly displayed pictures from the Shenandoah Valley, along with a host of brochures and information pieces that people could take. Yet as these (mostly) seniors walked by, we heard the most amusing response over and over again… “The Shenandoah Valley? I’ve been there. I’ve driven through on Interstate 81.”
While it is true that Interstate 81 does run the length of the Shenandoah Valley, this response amused Deb and I greatly.
These folks seemed to be under the impression that because they had driven through the Shenandoah Valley on interstate, there was nothing more to interest them!
Truthfully, they missed out on so much as they whizzed by at 70 mph!
How often do we miss out on things because we’re traveling at the speed of life?
When is the last time you slowed down to watch a falcon soaring high above? Or sat by a stream, listened to the trickling water, and pondered the mysteries of life? Or took a walk instead of a car? Or turned off all electronics to spend un-distracted time with your family?
It is hard to slow down, but oh so very important. Just like rest is required to maximize the benefits of exercise, down time is recovery time for our bodies and and minds.
Don’t be like those seniors, whizzing along at the speed of life and missing the magical moments with friends and family. Take time to disconnect and unwind, and you’ll discover that life is a whole lot more fun!
Escape to our cabins in Virginia and enjoy some time in the outdoors, experiencing all that life has to offer.
Have a Wonderful Day!
